A strong, visible culture aligned with Pitney Bowes values can deliver a competitive advantage in the marketplace. No one knows this better than Derek Johnson, General Manager of the Presort Services Operating Center in Milwaukee, WI.
Derek has transformed the culture and the team in Milwaukee from good to great in a short timeframe. Derek has been with Pitney Bowes Presort Services for 16 years. He began his tenure as General Manager of our Milwaukee facility in 2016 after moving from Massachusetts with his wife and two sons. Derek also has extensive Direct Mail experience. Previously, he worked as an Operations Manager in our Pennsylvania Standard Class (Marketing Mail) operating center, and as Product Manager of Direct Mail Solutions.
Derek received the 2017 Pitney Bowes Presort Services Culture Award in recognition for the positive changes he made in Milwaukee. I sat down with Derek to learn how he built and maintains a great culture and successful operating center. His first response says it all: “Our employees are at the heart of what sets Pitney Bowes apart from our competition.”
He went on to describe four behaviors that underpin the culture in Milwaukee:
- We put in extra effort to do the right things, the right way
We established new standards for excellence and the team has seen the results when we put in the effort to do things the right way. Milwaukee is committed to this practice in all aspects of our responsibilities.
- Client success is at the center of everything we do
Our culture fosters connection with our clients on an authentic level. Each employee feels like they are a stakeholder in the success of our clients. That makes everyone more engaged and invested in his or her job and performance.
- We are all in this together
Working together as a team makes us more successful. Whether it is in a department meeting, town hall or other staff meetings, I make sure to encourage teamwork and collaboration, and reward team efforts.
- Managers lead by example
Our managers understand that behaviors and actions demonstrate our culture. I talk with them about leading by example, setting a positive tone and staying authentic.
“Derek leads his team with purpose, integrity, accountability and a personal commitment to his clients , employees and community. By championing the values and beliefs of the Pitney Bowes culture through his actions and decisions, Derek leads by example and continually makes a difference.”
-Debbie Pfeiffer, President, Pitney Bowes Presort Services
“Derek immediately focused on improvements to certain areas, and our employees took notice. He knows our employees are our biggest asset, and he focuses on improving teamwork and the employee experience.”
-Amy Sonnleitner, Senior Human Resources Manager, past Milwaukee HR Advisor
