What skills and experiences do you feel helped you transition into your new role?

Being part of the EiC (Early in Career) program was a tremendous boost to my career development. In addition to the skills it introduced me to, the program provided access to an invaluable network of mentors—both formal and informal—who I continue to reach out to for advice on improving my sales and leadership skills and ways in which I can do my job better.

In addition, I make a conscious effort to think forward—thinking beyond the seemingly positive outcome of the current scenario to consider what possible negative implications it might have down the line. I try to bring this type of strategic thinking to every decision I make. It has proven a valuable advantage in managing teams and handling tough situations.

What do you enjoy most about your new role and/or Pitney Bowes?

In my new role, I enjoy the chance to influence the wider organization. But more broadly, I am passionate about our business. Our products and team are awesome, and I enjoy the chance to share that passion with our clients. At the end of the day, if you don’t believe in the impact you’re having on clients, you’re not going to enjoy yourself or succeed.

I am by nature a very motivated person and I genuinely enjoy my job. But I also enjoy helping others find the things that they want to achieve and tap into that drive to achieve their own personal and professional success. I spend about 80% of my time developing the tremendous talent around me, focusing on developing the skills needed to lift individuals and Pitney Bowes up.

Tell us about an individual that supported you through this transition.

I’ve had so many mentors along the way—and still have today—it’s impossible to pick just one. My very first sales manager, Simon Armitage, gave me a tremendous leg up in my career by giving me the confidence to chase my dreams and pursue a leadership role at Pitney Bowes.

Nigel Lester has been another tremendous influence. As my manager since 2012, he’s progressed in his career as I’ve progressed through mine. We have complemented each other in different ways along the way.

And Bob Guidotti has been fantastic—as a leader and a mentor. He is a big proponent of developing talent and gave me the chance to shadow him for a week last October giving me some much needed exposure at the Senior Leadership level.

There have been many others as well including my EiC mentor, Ian Hubbard as well as Jeff Winter, our Marketing VP. And now, I’m enjoying the chance to give back as a co-sponsor of an EiC project.

What advice would you give to others who are interested in moving into a new role within Pitney Bowes?

Look for opportunities and be ready to grab them. In 2009, I raised my hand to step in for a senior manager who had suddenly stepped down and was scheduled to deliver a presentation to a key audience at an important client. Management agreed to let me present the material and after I was finished, they offered me the Field Account Manager role. This was a pivotal step in my career.

Also invest in yourself. Reflect on where you want to be in the next few years and be honest with yourself about what skills and experiences you still need to get you there. Then commit to closing those gaps. If you don’t know how, ask. The people that work at Pitney Bowes are a great resource and, in my experience, always willing to help you succeed.

Finally, always live the life you want to live rather than the one you’re living now. We all work hard and it’s important to enjoy every milestone along the way but equally important to continue to challenge yourself. This will inevitably move your goalpost further and further away, but this is what ultimately helps us all grow both personally and professionally.
